Villagers and volunteers cleared wasteland at 750 meters in Kawauchi to plant vines in 2015, releasing Village and Riberu wines from a 2021 winery.
Kawauchi Winery sits in Kawauchi Village, at about 750 meters in the central Abukuma Highlands. Grape growing began in 2015, and the brewing facility was completed in 2021. The winery makes two series: 'Village,' from village-grown grapes, and 'Riberu,' from purchased grapes including fruit from Yoichi, Hokkaido. Its debut vintage was released in March 2022.
