Since 1933, monks at a Baroque-style monastery on a Tajimi hillside have made wine from grapes grown on their own grounds.
The Society of the Divine Word's Tajimi monastery, established in 1930, has made wine on its own grounds since 1933, known locally as Tajimi Shudoin Wine. Grapes — including Concord, Seibel, and Merlot — are grown across roughly 3,000 tsubo (about one hectare) of vineyard around the monastery, whose Baroque-style buildings evoke medieval Europe.
