On a mountain pass above Sapporo, Bankei Winery has made sulfite-free wine since 2001, an early adopter of the orange-wine method.
Bankei Winery opened in 2001 on a pass in Bankei, Chuo Ward, Sapporo. Its founder was drawn to the area after noting how closely Sapporo’s climate resembled California’s, and set out to hand-craft wine without added sulfites. The winery works with Yama Sauvignon, a hybrid grape, and Pinot Gris, and was an early adopter of orange-wine methods in Hokkaido.
