Otaru's negociant giant: wine as farm produce, made only from Japanese-grown grapes since 1974.
Hokkaido Wine Co. has worked from Otaru since 1974 on a simple conviction: wine is an agricultural product, not an industrial one. The house uses Japanese-grown grapes exclusively — Kerner, Pinot Noir, Zweigeltrebe and Chardonnay among them — and is known for unheated, 'living' wines meant to be picked up with the evening groceries and enjoyed at everyday tables. Its Pinot Noir cultivation stretches back more than thirty years. The Otaru Wine Gallery offers tastings and a shop.
