Overview

IRENKA

IRENKA was founded in January 2012 by David Ashley and Kuniyo Nagai, who planted Pinot Noir across roughly 1.3 hectares of fallow land in Kamihoro, Kurisawa, Iwamizawa. The vineyard now holds around 4,000 vines, farmed with reduced pesticides and fertilizer under the lutte raisonnée approach in pursuit of sustainable, unhurried ‘slow wine.’ Grapes are vinified under contract at the neighboring 10R winery, with Nagai leading the winemaking. The name IRENKA comes from the Ainu language, meaning ‘ideal’ or ‘hope.’
