Overview

Kamiuta Vineyard

Kamiuta Vineyard began in 2016 when Masato Endo, a regional revitalization cooperation worker, set out to restore an abandoned vineyard in Utashinai, a former coal-mining town in Hokkaido. In 2017 and 2018, citizens and volunteers planted 5,500 vines across six varieties, and the project obtained its brewing license in September 2025, making it one of Hokkaido’s newest wineries. It aims to build a new wine industry in a town shaped by the decline of coal mining.
