Tokachi Wine began when town-hall staff in Ikeda, facing a fiscal crisis, set out to make world-class wine, becoming Japan's first publicly run winery. Grapes bred locally, including Yamasachi (registered with the OIV as an international variety in 2020), Kiyomi, Kiyomai and Tokappu, are made into wine at the Wine Castle, a building modeled on a medieval European castle that also houses sales and tours.
