Karuizawa's first winery, housed in a former church, sparkling with the three grapes of Champagne.
Anne Winery began growing grapes in 2015 at 870 meters in Komoro's Nukachi district, opening a winery in Komoro's old castle town in 2018. In October 2023 it repurposed a historic building in Karuizawa — the former Oohinata Church and St. Joseph Nursery — to open Karuizawa's first winery. It ferments the three Champagne varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, into sparkling wine, choosing cold- and disease-resistant varieties suited to the high, cool climate.
