A garage winery in a converted precision-machinery factory, growing Japan's own yamabudo-Cabernet cross at 700m.
Oike Winery was born in 2015 after Yamagata-mura's 2014 designation as a Shinshu Yamagata wine special zone, built around the idea of 'wine nurtured by the village's satoyama time.' The garage winery sits at roughly 700m in the satoyama hills and favors nature-friendly cultivation, working out of a former precision-machinery factory converted into its cellar. Alongside Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, it grows Yama Sauvignon — a Japanese crossing of wild yamabudo and Cabernet Sauvignon — and runs a program called Camarade that lets visitors experience grape growing through to winemaking.
