An Italian chef came home to Unzen's hot-spring coast — and planted 1,900 vines on abandoned fields.
Obama Onsen Winery is the project of chef Takahiro Kawashima, who returned from Nagano to his home region and began planting abandoned farmland in Unzen in April 2020. By September 2021 he had opened a winery and Italian restaurant, the Obama Wine Shokudo, in the hot-spring town itself. Across six reclaimed plots grow about 1,900 vines of eight varieties, from Albariño and Chardonnay to Campbell Early, all fermented in-house. The restaurant runs on advance reservations, pairing the wines with the chef's cooking.
