With over 2,600 annual sunshine hours, Akeno drew a retiree turned winemaker to found this small Hokuto estate centered on Cabernet Sauvignon.
Domaine de la Akeno Venus was founded in 2018 in Akeno, Hokuto — a site with more than 2,600 hours of sunshine a year, among the highest in Japan. Its founder took up winemaking after retirement, studying at the Yamanashi Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry College and training at wineries around the prefecture before opening. Grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Koshu (Japan's indigenous white grape), are grown on the estate's own vineyard with reduced pesticide use.
