Burgundy-trained hands on Katsunuma grapes — Chanter Y.A, the cult barrel-aged label of Diamond Winery.
Diamond Winery has pressed Katsunuma fruit since 1939, incorporating in 1963, and makes deliberately hearty, jizake-like wines from Koshu and Muscat Bailey A. Its signature is the barrel work of winemaker Yoshio Amemiya, who trained in Burgundy and applies that experience to the Chanter Y.A line — barrel-fermented Koshu among it. Production is modest at roughly 45,000 bottles a year, all from Japanese-grown grapes. The winery opens mornings and afternoons, with weekend visits by reservation and tastings for a small charitable donation.
