At the southern foot of Mt. Kayagatake, a husband-and-wife team turned a debut 2015 vintage into an award-winning small Nirasaki winery.
Domaine Kayagatake sits at the southern foot of Mt. Kayagatake in Nirasaki. Its owner, Masahiko Abe, left a corporate career, earned an associate-level wine-chemistry qualification at the University of Yamanashi, and released his first vintage in 2015; the winery relocated to its current site in 2017. That debut vintage was selected as the best Japanese wine at the 'Nihon de Nomou: Saiko no Wine' tasting competition. The estate grows Muscat Bailey A (a Japanese-bred red) and Koshu (Japan's indigenous white grape) on its own vineyard, also using Merlot grown in nearby Hosaka.
