A third-generation grape farmer and a Burgundy-trained winemaker built Kisvin on estate fruit alone — and a Master of Wine took notice.
Kisvin Winery was founded in 2013 by Yasuhiro Ogiwara, a third-generation grape farmer, on the conviction that growing grapes is making wine. He brought in winemaker Mayu Saito, who trained in California and at a leading Burgundy domaine, to lead an agricultural production company that uses only its own estate-grown grapes. Master of Wine Gérard Basset singled out the 2014 Kisvin Chardonnay for high praise, bringing the winery international recognition. Across 21 grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, the winery makes small-batch wines by hand, from its site 15 minutes on foot from Enzan Station.
