Named for a character in Kenji Miyazawa’s fairy tale, Kurambon Wine has farmed Katsunuma without chemicals since 2007, fermenting with wild yeast.
Kurambon Wine was founded in 1913 in Katsunuma, when first-generation owner Chosaku began making wine from his own grapes; by its 100th anniversary in 2013 the winery had moved entirely to domestically grown fruit. Since 2007 it has farmed without chemical pesticides or fertilizers, guided by the belief that people don’t manufacture wine so much as help the grape become it. Estate grapes ferment with indigenous yeast and are bottled with minimal filtration. A 130-year-old main house now serves as a wine salon above an underground cellar, a minute’s walk from the vineyard. The name comes from Kurambon, a character in Kenji Miyazawa’s fairy tale Yamanashi.
