A semiconductor maker’s clean rooms and nitrogen systems, repurposed to craft Koshu and Muscat Bailey A with industrial precision in Katsunuma.
MGVs Winery opened in 2017 in Katsunuma, Koshu City, when Shioyama Seisakusho, a semiconductor manufacturer, entered the wine business under Enzan Factory Co. The winery specializes in Koshu (Japan’s indigenous white grape) and Muscat Bailey A (a Japanese-bred red), handling everything from grape growing to sales, and repurposes its parent company’s nitrogen-gas systems and clean rooms — originally built for semiconductor fabrication — for wine brewing and bottling. Each label carries a code of letters and three digits that encodes its origin, method and vinification, under the guiding idea of carrying a fruitful land into the future. Visitors can view the tank room and bottling area through glass free of charge, with paid tastings available.
