Named 'L'Orient' in French, this Katsunuma house aims to carry Koshu — and its hometown — out to the world.
Shirayuri Jozo takes its wine name, Lorian, from the French L'Orient — 'the Orient' — chosen to signal winemaking of a standard equal to Europe's. The house prioritizes staying local, believing that caring for the home ground is the foundation of good wine, under the banner 'Katsunuma to the world.' Surrounded by mountains and shaped by the Sasago-oroshi wind off the Southern Alps — which drives a wide day-night temperature swing — the winery grows Koshu (Japan's indigenous white grape) and seven other varieties on its own vines, including Muscat Bailey A, Delaware, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Adirondack.
