Operating since 1952, Shioyama's grape farmers pool unsold and off-grade fruit into about 7,000 rare bottles a year, sold almost nowhere but on-site.
Ushioku Daiichi Winery, operating since 1952, is a tiny, farmer-run brewery in Shioyama for the growers' own consumption. Local grape farmers bring in fruit that can't be sold as table grapes, or surplus fruit, to make wine — producing an extremely limited roughly 2,000 bottles of 720ml and 5,000 of 1.8-liter bottles a year. With almost no market distribution, it is known as a wine that can only be bought on-site.
